This Issue in RIVETS

In the past, a large networking conference was held each year for all Building Bridges project teams. This year, individual "Capstone" experiences replaced the annual gathering. Each team designed a culminating experience to meet the needs of the project team. This issue of RIVETS spotlights two of the Capstone experiences that have been completed.

Bridges Project Director Gene Tempel collects ideas at IUPUI’s Center On Philanthropy Board Retreat.

Center On Philanthropy Charts International Course
The Center on Philanthropy headquartered at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) used its capstone opportunity to focus the agenda of its 2001 board retreat on increasing the international presence of the Center through partnerships and collaborations. The Center currently has programs in Latin America, Europe, Asia and South Africa. Several of the Latin American programs resulted directly from contacts made through the Building Bridges Initiative and related meetings.

The retreat was held in downtown Indianapolis, in the conference center of PanAm Plaza, a landmark building built for the 1987 Pan American Games. The retreat opened with a concise yet thorough overview of the Center on Philanthropy’s domestic activities. Next, board members heard a presentation on the Center’s current programs in Latin America. Panelists included Marcela Rovzar (Procura), Celia Cruz (IDIS), and Daniel Yoffe (CEDES). Milton Murray moderated the session.

The second day of the retreat began with a panel discussion of the Center’s education efforts in Europe, Africa and Asia. Presenters included Robert Payton (IUPUI), Helmut Heinzel (Donau Universitat Krems), Juree Vichit-Vadakan (The Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society, The National Institute of Development Administration, Thailand), and Jane Schlegel (International Center of Indianapolis, Inc.).

The two-day meeting concluded with a discussion of the Center’s future international role in nonprofit management education and training. Center Director Gene Tempel was pleased with the outcome of the meeting. Along with valuable input from the Center’s Board, Gene said "I think we also brought our partners closer to each other and the Center. Truly a capstone experience."
