W. K. Kellogg Foundation Service-Learning Retrospective

The W. K. Kellogg Foundation commissioned a retrospective study of a variety of K-12 service-learning projects that it had funded between 1990 and 2000 – a ten-year span that saw service-learning become a widespread educational approach.

CenterPoint Institute formed a team with RMC Research (Denver, CO) and Compass Institute (Minneapolis, MN) to research Kellogg documents, create a preliminary report, convene selected service-learning grantees to discuss and refine the report, and produce a final retrospective report. The final retrospective evaluation report can be accessed here.

Out of the initial evaluation report, two other products were created:

  • Formative Years: Lessons from a Decade in the Service-Learning Field.
    A report
focusing on the critical success factors of individual service-learning programs as well as the sustainability of the service-learning field.
  • Looking Back, Going Forward: How to adopt, implement and institutionalize Service-Learning. A self-contained, interactive workshop for change agents based on ten years of learning from W. K. Kellogg foundation grantees.
