W. K. Kellogg Foundation
Financial and
Organizational Sustainability Workshops
In 2003, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation surveyed 35 of its small and
mid-sized grantee organizations to determine their capacity-building
needs. The grantees reported a need for training and education in
governance issues, fundraising, marketing, and finance.
A regional pilot workshop was held in Raleigh, North Carolina in May,
2004. 115 participants from 73 organizations attended. The event
received a very favorable evaluation.
The Kellogg Foundation then contracted CenterPoint Institute to plan and
execute another regional workshop incorporating the lessons learned from
Raleigh. In April, 2005, 103 participants from 62 organizations gathered
in Battle Creek, Michigan, again with very favorable evaluations. Citing
the desirability to connect grantees from a broader area, the Kellogg
Foundation and CenterPoint Institute devised a plan to offer two
national workshops, allowing the participants to choose Nashville,
Tennessee in February, 2006 or Charlotte, North Carolina in April, 2006.
243 people, representing 154 organizations, attended. Evaluations showed
that both workshops received high marks for content, usefulness, and
satisfaction.
In addition,
CenterPoint managed the distribution, tracking, and reporting of
$780,000 in honoraria, or small grants, allocated by the Kellogg
Foundation to support further capacity-building efforts by grantees.
